Swedish Meatballs with Lingonberry Gravy, finished dish

Ingredients

  • 1/2 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 lb ground pork
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 small onion, finely grated
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 tsp ground allspice
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups beef broth
  • 1/3 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup lingonberry or cranberry preserves
  • Mashed potatoes and pickled cucumber, for serving

Steps

  1. Soak breadcrumbs in milk for 5 minutes. Mix with beef, pork, onion, egg, allspice and salt until just combined.
  2. Roll into 20 small meatballs. Melt butter in a large skillet and brown the meatballs on all sides.
  3. Reduce heat, cover and cook until the centers reach 160°F; transfer meatballs to a plate.
  4. Stir flour into the skillet drippings for 1 minute. Whisk in broth and simmer until smooth and thickened.
  5. Whisk in cream, then return meatballs to coat in the gravy for 2 minutes.
  6. Serve with mashed potatoes, lingonberry preserves and pickled cucumber.
